THE BENEFITS OF RESISTANCE TRAINING

 

Do you prefer cardio or resistance training?

Is resistance training something you have always believed is for males only to build size?  Or never given it much thought?

The benefits for everyone are HUGE!  It is so beneficial that we should be ALL performing and adding some type of resistance training a few times a week.

A few of the main benefits include:

  • Increasing and restoring bone density.

Inactivity and ageing can lead to a decrease in bone density and brittleness.  Only weight resistance training can achieve this increase and restore.

  • Improved physical performance and appearance

Muscles use energy to produce movement.  This is functioning as the engine or powerhouse of the body.  Strength training increases muscle size, strength and endurance, and provides improvement in work, sports and general day to day activity.

  • Overall performance and body composition which directly influences self esteem, self worth and self confidence.
  • Injury prevention

Strength training strengthens tendons and ligaments thus supporting injury prevention

  • Metabolic efficiency

The more muscle mass, the higher your Basal Metabolic Rate is, and less likely that food will be stored as body fat.  Muscles have higher energy requirements and use 25% of our energy.

  • Decreased risk of coronary disease

Resistance training decreases cholesterol and assists in lowering blood pressure

  • Improved balance, flexibility, mobility and stability

Stronger and more resilient muscles.  It also improves balance, helps with more comfortable living and fewer falls and accidents.

Are you a female and worried about becoming bulky?  This is not the case!  Due to our hormones, our body does not react the same to strength training as a male’s does!  Strength training will only assist in creating the lean body look we all want! As mentioned, the more muscle mass we have, the faster our metabolism, and therefore our fat stores are used while we are resting!

Resistance and interval training is 90% more effective at burning fat and getting the body we desire!   Cardio only burns fat while we do it.  Resistance training burns fat for HOURS after we have finished!
